Last April, Unit 10 came into existence. At one point, they were aiming to open for one of the headliners at Red Barn Series. This weekend, they were one of the headliners.
You're probably wondering how they ended up in this situation … let’s start at the beginning.
Brady Fowlkes (vocals and guitar) and James Eaton (piano) met through Auburn’s jazz band, and last April decided to start a band. They went to watch Bryan Cook (bass) play at Piccolo, a bar and lounge in the Auburn Hotel, and they introduced themselves. Jim Shaw (drums) joined them, and they became a band, performing for the first time ever at a UPC Open Mic Night.
(At this point in telling the story, Fowlkes gets incredibly excited, saying “this is important, this is important,” so listen up.) The name Unit 10 came about on the band’s first night of practice at Cook’s house. They needed a name for an open mic night at Spicer’s Music, so they went outside to brainstorm. Eaton suggested Unit 10 because Cook lived in Unit 10 in Eagle’s Landing, and it stuck.
Their first big event was last semester, Alpha Gam Wing Jam. Ashley Moates, the current Miss Auburn, asked Eaton to be one of the participating bands. They were supposed to go on last, but ended up going on first. "We were very nervous, very insecure," Eaton said. But, "somehow or another,” Fowlkes said, “we ended up winning Wing Jam, and that was the first thing we’d ever done besides open mic night. It was affirming to me because it meant we didn’t suck a lot."
After Wing Jam, they said they were aiming to open at UPC’s Red Barn Series. Only being the second big event they’ve played at, they weren’t expecting to be a headliner. They performed “some originals, some songs from 50 years ago, and some songs from 5 months ago,” Fowlkes said.
“Our band ideology is the cliché ‘all kinds of music’,” Eaton said.
As for what’s next for Unit 10? “The Grammy’s,” Cook said. After they try to record for a music video, write some of their own stuff, and play at a few sorority and fraternity events, that is.
